Proxy Server

Proxy server is simply but a computer act as an intermediate/bridge between the internet and user computer. It allows the user’s computer to make indirect connection to other network services. The proxy server is mainly used to hide the current location of the user and share the internet connection between multiple users.

When we use the proxy server, client computers will first connect to the proxy server then send a request and the proxy server first look the cache to see if the request is made previously. If not a fresh request is send to the internet from the proxy server (here the client will be using the internet of proxy server).

The benefits of using proxy server:

We will able to share internet connection via LAN connection. Reduce the cost of the internet as it can be shared with multiple clients.

Can be used as VPN connection while working it will help to hide the actual location and help to display the location as we prefer (It depend upon the proxy server you use to access computer). In short it hides the actual IP/Location which helps to surf anonymous and help to improve the security.

Can resist the outbound connection and apply filter thus improve the security features.

Different Types of Proxies

• CGI (Common Gateway Interface) Proxies– CGI proxies are mainly used to access the website which is blocked by corporate companies, education institution etc .CGI proxies hide our IP and pass the website url to the proxy server to gain access to such sites. For example social media sites will be blocked in various corporate companies, education institution the CGI proxies help us to access the sites.
• Transparent Proxy– The Transparent proxy which introduces itself as a proxy server but doesn’t hide the client actual IP address. As a result the client won’t know whether they are using proxy server or not. It helps to get through the IP block but no anonymity is provided for the user.
• Anonymous Proxy– Anonymous proxy will help to hide the client IP address but introduce to the website as a proxy server. It will help to give some anonymity over IP and provide incorrect IP address to the accessed website.
• High Anonymity Proxy– Such proxy server is most secure and provide full anonymity for the user .Which hide the client IP address and it itself act as a device.

How does proxy server work?

Here the client try to access a website and the firewall (setup by schools or corporate office) block the access and send a access denied/resist notification to the user. In such case the proxy server comes in use as it will bypass the firewall rule and provide access to the website.

Here we can see that the proxy server will bypass the firewall by pretending the connection is requested from a different IP/User.
